#2. Why Boogie Boarding is the Perfect Way to Learn How to Surf!

Updated: Oct 17, 2023

If I could go back to my first days at the beach, I would have learned how to ride a boogie board much better than I did. I rode one for my 9th Grade summer, but then I ditched them for a surfboard because of peer pressure.

Boogie boarding is a fun and easy way to learn how to catch waves, before trying to learn how to surf. In this post, we’ll explore the importance of boogie boarding for beginners and how it can help you become a better surfer.

Boogie boarding is a water sport where you ride the wave on your stomach lying down on a body board. It can be a recreational activity or a professional sport you partake in. Boogie boarding is easier than surfing, as it requires less technical skill, less balance, and is less physically demanding. As such, it is an ideal activity for everyone.

One of the most difficult things to learn in surfing is paddling and catching waves. Surfboards aren’t typically very stable without proper muscle control so prospective surfers often can’t stay on their board, let alone paddle effectively. Paddling is also exhausting. Many new surfers can’t make it out past the break before becoming too exhausted to continue and have to turn around. Boogie boards, though less hydrodynamic, float relatively well and are quite wide. You typically start boogie boarding where it is shallower, where you can stand. This allows you to use your legs to push off and kick as well as paddle instead of solely relying on your arms. While the new surfer is still paddling out and getting tired, you are steadily building simple control muscles in your core, conserving energy, improving your balance and paddling, and are already moving to the next set of fundamentals, wave dynamics and catching waves.

Catching waves on a boogie board are directly transferable skills and take less energy to learn on a boogie board than they do surfing.

Boogie boards come in different sizes, shapes, and styles to suit your preference and surfing needs. Some of the factors that you should consider when choosing a boogie board are:

  • Thickness: Boogie boards have different thicknesses, and lengths for riders of all sizes.

  • Height: Boogie boards have different heights, ranging from low to high.

  • Closure: Boogie boards have "leashes" on them that attach to a rider's wrist so that they are less likely to get away from a rider.

Boogie boarding can help you prepare for surfing. It’s a perfect way for beginners to get used to the ocean’s currents. They will also be able to practice timing and balance, which are both necessary in surfing.

In conclusion, boogie boarding is an excellent way to learn how to catch waves and surf. It’s easier than surfing but still gives you the exhilarating experience of catching waves. So if you’re looking for a fun way to spend time at the beach with family and friends while learning how to surf, give boogie boarding a try!
