#25- "Winter Wetsuits for Surfing"

Updated: Oct 16, 2023

Winter is coming, but that doesn't mean you must stop surfing. In fact, winter can offer some of the best waves and uncrowded lineups if you're willing to brave the cold. However, to enjoy surfing in the winter, you need a proper wetsuit that can keep you warm and comfortable in frigid water temperatures. That's where winter wetsuits come in.

A winter wetsuit, also known as a steamer, is a type of wetsuit that covers your entire body, including your arms and legs. A hood can also be attached to protect your head and ears from the wind chill and possible ice cream headaches. A winter wetsuit is usually made of thick neoprene, a synthetic rubber that traps a thin layer of water between your skin and the material, keeping you warm and insulated. Winter wetsuit neoprene thicknesses range between 4, 5, 6, and sometimes even 7 mm, depending on the water is cold.

A winter wetsuit is different from a spring suit in several ways. A spring suit is a wetsuit with short or long sleeves and short legs, usually covering the thighs. A spring suit is ideal for water temperatures of about 68 degrees or higher, and it provides light warmth and protection from the sun, wind, and abrasion. A spring suit is also more flexible and easier to wear and take off than a winter wetsuit.

Some of the benefits of wearing a winter wetsuit are:

- You can surf longer and more comfortably in cold water without hypothermia or frostbite. - You can surf in places with amazing waves but harsh weather conditions, such as Alaska, Norway, or Canada. - You can avoid crowds and enjoy more space and freedom in the water.

If you're wondering where to find a winter wetsuit, here are some of the best brands and models that I recommend:

- Patagonia R4 Yulex Front Zip Hooded: This eco-friendly winter wetsuit uses Yulex, a plant-based alternative to neoprene. Yulex is renewable and biodegradable, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 80%. It also provides warmth and comfort comparable to conventional neoprene.

- Rip Curl Flashbomb 4/3 Chest Zip: This high-performance winter wetsuit features Rip Curl's Flash Lining, a fast-drying material that wicks away water and retains heat. It also has E5 neoprene, which is super stretchy and durable.

- Vissla 7 Seas 5/4 Hooded Chest Zip: This is a top-of-the-line winter wetsuit with no zipper at all, meaning it has no seams or weak points. It also has Brain Fuzz hollow lining in the thermal insulation, which creates air pockets for extra warmth.

These are just some examples of winter wetsuits that differ from spring suits. Many more options are available online or in stores, so you can browse around and find the perfect one for you. A winter wetsuit is an excellent choice for any surfer who wants to stay warm, comfortable, and stylish in the cold water.
