Fifty Things I Wish I Knew BEFORE I Started Surfing! #11- Apps- Overall Weather

Picture yourself on a perfect beach day! What do you see? A stormy sky, snowflakes, and penguins? I doubt it. What sounds nice to you? Maybe a sunny day with 80°F air, 72°F water, a gentle offshore breeze, and low humidity? If that sounds like your ideal day, then you're on the right track for finding the best days to learn how to surf. You want to avoid rain, cold weather, and strong winds... but how do you know when those days will happen? You can't just wait for them to fit into your schedule. You have to be ready to go when they do... and that might mean changing your plans to catch some waves instead of your usual day off. Surfing is different from going to a yoga class or the gym. It requires some effort and flexibility. And that's a good lesson for life too! Surfing teaches you more than just how to ride waves. It teaches you how to live better!

Ok- so let's look at a screenshot from this week's forecast on the Weather Channel App. Look at that! What's coming on Monday? Rain- and you know what that means? Dirty water from the storm drains. You don't want to surf in that for 72 hours AFTER it starts raining.

I'm glad that rain is coming because it reminds me of other things I can do, like- -Catching up with family and friends- -Watching some surf videos -Yoga -Laundry -LAP SWIMMING!!!!

Those are all things I do on rainy days and for the 3 days after rain. NO SURF unless you want to risk getting sick from the water and growing an alien in your ear!

This forecast helps me plan ahead and surf now, instead of putting it off, because next week I won't be able to surf for half the week. That's another life lesson. Carpe diem!

Ok- and lastly- I want to surf on nice, low-wind days because those are the best and most beautiful days to surf, but they also attract more people, so be prepared for crowds. You see how this one thing about surfing can lead to many other things you might have yet to consider? Each of these "First 50" does the same thing. But then you're more aware and know what questions to ask.

In the next post, I'll cover Wind. Oh- look at the Wind Speed in this pic- 11MPH! That's not good... but it could be worse.
