Best and Worst Boards To Learn On- "Fun Board"
A "Fun Board" is a kind of surfboard that has various shapes and sizes that are not as extreme as shortboards or longboards. They are usually between 6 and 8 feet long, with a round nose, a wide tail, and two or three fins. Fun boards are versatile and adaptable to different situations and skill levels. They offer a balance between stability and maneuverability, making them fun to ride on small to medium waves.
But here's the problem: fun boards are also very challenging to learn on for beginners who weigh more than 180 pounds. Why? Because they have less volume, buoyancy, and floatation than longer or thicker boards. This means they are harder to paddle, balance, and catch waves with. They also require more strength, endurance, and technique to control and maneuver. And they are more suitable for lighter or more experienced surfers who know how to use their weight distribution and leverage to their advantage.
So unless you're a natural talent or have a lot of patience, learning how to surf on a fun board can be very frustrating and discouraging for beginners who weigh more than 180 pounds. You will spend more time sinking in the water than actually surfing. You will miss many waves, fall many times, and get a lot of fatigue and soreness. You will also limit your progress and potential as a surfer.
That's why I would start out with a Soft Top or a Foamie. They are longer, thicker, and more buoyant than a fun board. They give you more volume, floatation, and stability in the water. A Foamie helps you to learn the basics of surfing without worrying about the drawbacks of a fun board.
I know- 9 and 10 foot foamies are hard to carry and fit in your car, but the pain of getting them to the surf is worth it.
