Fifty Things I Wish I Knew BEFORE I Started Surfing! #33- "Fish""

Best and Worst Boards To Learn On- "Fish"

It's unlikely that you'd find a "Fish" to surf on, but just in case somebody hands you one to learn on, I highly recommend you politely refuse and go rent a 9-foot "foamie."

A "fish" is a type of surfboard that has a distinctive shape: it is short, wide, and thick, with a swallowtail and two large fins. These shorter surfboards were originally created in the 1970s as an alternative to longboards in small, mushy waves. It is fast, loose, and responsive, making it ideal for surfing in weak or crowded conditions. It is also easy to paddle and catch waves with.

But here's the catch: "fish" surfboards are also very tricky to learn on. Why? Because they have less control, stability, and maneuverability than longer or narrower boards. This means they are harder to balance, turn, and carve with. They also require more skill, technique, and style to surf well. And they are more suitable for experienced surfers who know how to use their speed and flow to their advantage.

Like other shortboards, unless you are a natural prodigy or have a lot of time and patience to spare, learning how to surf on a fish can be very frustrating and discouraging. You will spend more time sliding out of control than actually surfing. You will miss a lot of turns, fall a lot of times, and get a lot of spray in your face. You will also limit your progress and potential as a surfer.

That's why I would start with a different type of surfboard instead. A board that is longer, narrower, and more forgiving than a fish. A board that offers me more control, stability, and maneuverability in the water. A board that helps me learn the basics of surfing without worrying about the drawbacks of a fish.

Many types of surfboards can suit your needs as a beginner, such as longboards, fun shapes, or soft tops. You can find many surfboards for sale or rent at your local surf shop or online. Just make sure you choose the right size and shape for your height, weight, and ability.
