Fifty Things I Wish I Knew BEFORE I Started Surfing! #32- Surfboards

Surfing is an exciting sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. But before you hit the waves, you must choose the right surfboard for your style and preferences. There are many different types of surfboards, each with advantages and disadvantages. In this brief, we will explain the main features and characteristics of six common types of surfboards: longboards, shortboards, fun shapes, fish, foam boards, and soft tops.

-Longboards- are the oldest and most traditional type of surfboard. They are usually between 9 and 12 feet long, with a wide nose, a rounded tail, and a single fin. Longboards are ideal for beginners, offering stability, buoyancy, and easy paddling. They are also great for cruising on small to medium waves and performing classic maneuvers like nose riding and cross-stepping.

-Shortboards- are the most popular type of surfboard among advanced and competitive surfers. They are usually between 5 and 7 feet long, with a narrow nose, a pointed tail, and three or more fins. Shortboards are designed for speed, agility, and performance. They allow surfers to make sharp turns, cutbacks, airs, and other radical moves on fast, hollow waves.

-Fun Shapes- are a category of surfboards with various shapes and sizes less extreme than shortboards or longboards. They are usually between 6 and 8 feet long, with a rounded nose, a wide tail, and two or three fins. Fun shapes are versatile and adaptable to different conditions and skill levels. They offer a balance between stability and maneuverability, making them fun to ride on small to medium waves.

-"Fish" surfboards- are a type of fun, distinctive shape: they are short, wide, and thick, with a swallow tail and two large fins. Fish surfboards were originally created in the 1970s as an alternative to longboards in small, mushy waves. They are fast, loose, and responsive, making them ideal for surfing in weak or crowded conditions. They are also easy to paddle and catch waves with.

-Foam boards, also known as "foamies," are surfboards with a soft foam core covered with thick foam or plastic. They are usually between 6 and 10 feet long, with a wide nose, a round tail, and one or more fins. Foam boards are the best type of surfboard for beginners, as they are safe, durable, cheap, and easy to learn on. Experienced surfers can also use them as fun boards in small or choppy waves.

-"Soft tops"- are similar to foam boards but have a hard core covered with a thin layer of foam or rubber. They are usually between 5 and 8 feet long, with various shapes and fin configurations. Soft tops are more rigid and responsive than foam boards but still softer and safer than regular surfboards. They are suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers who want to have fun in mellow or playful waves.

As you can see, there is no one-size-fits-all type of surfboard. Each type of surfboard has pros and cons depending on your skill level, surfing style, wave conditions, and personal preference. The best way to find out which type of surfboard suits you best is to try different ones until you find your perfect match.

In the next posts I'll cover which boards I would use if I were learning how to surf and which boards I would avoid.
