Fifty Things I Wish I Knew BEFORE I Started Surfing! #28- Learning Style-Adult

Learning how to surf as an adult can be challenging and less fun than learning as a child or athlete. Adults often bring past experiences and issues like trust, fear, anxiety, and fear of failure into new activities. These negative thoughts can make it difficult for adults to learn how to surf effectively.

Children, on the other hand, don’t have any negative experiences with surfing and are more open to learning new things. They do need to be reminded to be cautious and learn how to respect the ocean.

Athletes come to a new experience with high levels of motivation and possibly a bit of trepidation, but it doesn’t slow them down from getting fully into an activity, especially if they are with a coach or instructor who they feel they can trust.

Some positive aspects of learning how to surf as an adult include being able to better understand the ocean and its movements due to having more life experience than children. Adults also have more patience than children which can help them learn how to surf more effectively.

Negative aspects of learning how to surf as an adult include having less time due to work or family obligations which can make it difficult to find time for lessons. Adults may also have more fear due to past experiences which can make it harder for them to learn how to surf at the intermediate and expert level. One way to combat this is to focus on the basics. Instead of insisting on surfing the waves on the outside, it is far more beneficial to stay on the inside waves, closer to shore and learning how to stand up on the whitewash 100% of the time. This one action can take many months of practice for some to learn, but each time a person goes to the beach, they learn little things without even realizing it. Things like know the best spot for a new person to surf at, best place to park, best shorts to wear, best way to wax a surfboard, etc. Those things can cause a lot of frustration in the first days of surfing, but it gets a little easier each day.

My recommendation- have fun like a kid and then learn like an athlete. Let the "adult" stay home, Lol!
