Fifty Things I Wish I Knew BEFORE I Started Surfing! #29- Learning Style- Athlete

Do you want to learn how to surf like an athlete? Athletes have a disciplined and dedicated way of learning new things without excuses, complaints, or distractions. They focus on the basics and repetition and treat failure as a learning opportunity. Surfing is a sport that requires a lot of physical and mental skills, such as balance, coordination, timing, and confidence. However, many people who want to learn how to surf face challenges that prevent them from improving their performance. They may need more motivation, consistency, or feedback. They may also need better habits, correct techniques, or unrealistic goals. These are some characteristics of the "adult" learning style, which is the least effective for surfing.

On the other hand, some people who learn how to surf have an athlete learning style. They are motivated, consistent, and receptive. They don't make excuses or complain about the conditions. They show up and do their best. They practice the basics and repeat them until they master them. They also seek feedback from coaches, peers, or videos. They analyze their mistakes and work on their weaknesses. They set realistic and measurable goals and track their progress.

The "athlete" learning style is not only for professional or competitive surfers. Anyone can learn to surf like an athlete, regardless of age or background. The key is to have a strong work ethic, a growth mindset, and a passion for surfing. It would help if you were willing to challenge yourself, learn from others, and enjoy the process.

In the next post, I'll write about how we can ruin new experiences by learning like an "adult" instead of a child or athlete. Are you ready to do it as they do?

Funny thing- When I train an athlete, I initially tell them, "In the beginning, there's 1 rule- No questions!" I thought I was original in saying that, but a surf mentor said it to a student in one of the best surf movies of all time- North Shore! Why do I say it? Because the answers to most questions are too complicated to answer when a person is new to surfing. So instead of asking, I tell them to keep doing the action, and eventually, they will find the answer through "doing." It is often a little frustrating for the athlete, but we laugh about it because they are so determined.
