Fifty Things I Wish I Knew BEFORE I Started Surfing! #20- Sunscreen

Things to think about when you're picking out Sunscreen!

Sunscreen is essential for surfers, as we are exposed to the sun's rays for long periods. Sunscreen can protect your skin from sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. However, not all sunscreens are created equal. Some sunscreens can be toxic, harmful to the environment, or irritate your eyes. That's why you must choose a safe, effective, and comfortable sunscreen for surfing.

One of the things you need to look for in sunscreen for surfing is the active ingredient. The active ingredient is what blocks the UV rays from reaching your skin. There are two types of active ingredients: chemical and mineral. Chemical sunscreens use synthetic compounds that absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. Mineral sunscreens use natural minerals like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide that reflect the UV rays away from your skin.

The problem with chemical sunscreens is that they can be toxic to your body and the environment. Some common chemical ingredients in sunscreens are oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, and homosalate. These chemicals can penetrate your skin and enter your bloodstream, where they can disrupt your hormones, cause allergic reactions, or damage your cells. They can also wash off your skin and contaminate the water, where they can harm the coral reefs and marine life.

The advantage of mineral sunscreens is that they are safe and natural. They do not penetrate your skin or enter your bloodstream, so they do not pose any health risks. They also do not harm coral reefs or marine life, so they are eco-friendly. They are also more stable and resistant to heat and water, lasting longer on your skin.

Another thing you need to look for in sunscreen for surfing is the SPF level. SPF stands for sun protection factor, indicating how well the sunscreen protects you from UVB rays. UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburn and skin cancer. The higher the SPF level, the more protection you get from UVB rays. However, SPF does not measure how well the sunscreen protects you from UVA rays. UVA rays are the ones that cause premature aging and wrinkles. To get protection from UVA and UVB rays, you need broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Another thing you need to look for in sunscreen for surfing is the eye irritation factor. Some sunscreens can sting your eyes if they get into them, which can be uncomfortable and distracting when surfing. To avoid this, you need sunscreen that is non-irritating or eye-safe. You can also look for a sunscreen that has a stick or paste form, which makes it easier to apply around your eyes without dripping or running.

Based on these criteria, I have found some of the best sunscreens for surfing that are not toxic and don't sting your eyes. Here are my top picks:
