Fifty Things I Wish I Knew BEFORE I Started Surfing! #13- Ocean Hazards!

How to Avoid Jellyfish, Stingrays, and Sharp Object Hazards When Surfing

Surfing is a great way to enjoy the ocean, but it has some dangers. You might encounter jellyfish, stingrays, or sharp objects in the water that can hurt you. Here are some tips on how to avoid them and what to do if you get injured. But keep in mind, there is no way to avoid these things 100% of the time.

Jellyfish are soft animals that have stinging tentacles. You can get a painful rash on your skin if you touch them. Wear a wetsuit or a rash guard covering your body to avoid them. Also, check the jellyfish forecast. If you see any jellyfish in the water, stay away from them.

Stingrays are flat fish that have spines on their tails. If you step on them, they can sting you and cause bleeding and infection. To avoid them, you can wear booties when surfing. Also, shuffle your feet when walking in shallow water to scare them away. This is called the "stingray shuffle."

Sharp objects are rocks, coral, shells, glass, or metal. They can cut or puncture your skin and cause infection. To avoid them, you can wear surf booties. Also, avoid surfing in areas with sharp objects in the water. You can check the Lifeguard towers for local information and advisories.

If you get injured by any of these hazards, don't panic. First, you should find the nearest lifeguard and ask for help. They can treat your wound and give you first aid. Call 911 or go to the nearest hospital immediately if there is no lifeguard.

Unfortunately, hazards like these and many others can cause serious injuries when we're in the water. Still, if we are knowledgeable and careful, we can significantly decrease the likelihood of injury.
